Valentine’s Day is normally associated with rose petals, milk chocolate dipped strawberries and romantic evenings by the fire. However, according to Rathwood, it’s associated with muck, sweaty mucky bodies running though fields & over bales. You may or may not have heard of the Valentines Muckfest which Tullow holds religiously every year. If not, don’t worry the title is fairly self-explanatory – running 5 kilometres through the muck and over obstacles. Unfortunately, they had to take a break this year but in the interest of sharing the love Tullow Rugby Club have partnered up with Rathwood to run what they’re calling the ‘Seán O’Brien Challenge’ on the 17th of February 2018. The Séan O'Brien Challenge is a fitness event for families and individuals between the ages of 8 - 80 years old. It consists of a 5km run/walk with 6 challenges along the way & while it’s not specifically promising muck, it is through a woodland in Ireland in February so I’d say chances are high! Tickets are €9 per adult and €5 per child. So if you’re looking for a great way to start your Valentine’s, visit Rathwood for the day! It starts at 9 and finishes at 5, with different entertainment being held throughout the day. Who would want to spend Valentine’s sitting by an open fire when they could be running, pushing your partner into a pile of muck – “oops sorry honey”. And if you haven’t found that someone special yet you never know, you might just bump into them!
Food is very important on Valentine’s Day. Some would say it has to be fancy, it has to scream “showstopper” while others say its all about the thought & effort, so if you’re cooking a homemade meal, I applaud you & wish you the best of luck! I pray that your oven mitts protect your hands, that your salmon or steak is cooked to perfection and that your loved one does not get food poisoning. For those of you dining out – nothing shows them how much their loved more than a fancy restaurant meal bathed in the romantic glow of candlelight. Carlow offers a wide range of restaurants catering for all tastebuds. Tapas is a firm favourite right now with Pimentos and Mimosa packed out every weekend. Not into tapas? Head to Joe’s Chinese or Jasmine Palace for an oriental flavour to your meal. Or for the more traditional meal try The Boardwalk, The Boneyard or our very own Plum Tree Bistro. Whatever your choice you won’t be disappointed! Remember to book well in advance though!
