Cake Trends and Toppers
In almost 15 years plus as a wedding coordinator I have seen some beautiful cake creations and even though the majority of couples tend to still have a tier of the traditional fruit cake to keep the grannies happy. However, it was the tradition to keep a tier of your wedding cake for the Christening of your first child, hence why the fruit cake was the preferred choice as it has a good shelf life. Couples, however, have moved away from the traditional and moved with the times, lately, the most popular type of cake I have seen is the yummy biscuit cake, with loads of different variations of this including rocky road, Crunchie to name a few. Another favourite I have seen is the Red Velvet cake its light and fresh not too heavy and makes for an appealing slice.
The flavours are not the only thing that has changed, it is now becoming a work of art and one that seems to become ever more popular are Naked cakes, these deconstructed cakes will have the mouth-watering fillings on full display. Fresh berries work well for a summertime wedding, while seasonal fruits, like apples, pears or blood oranges, are ideal in winter and fall. The best thing about a naked cake is that it’s a feast for the eyes and the appetite—especially for a rustic or more low-key celebration (although that’s definitely not to say you can’t dress it up).
All things metallic really took off and especially rose gold. The best part about metallic is they can adapt to pretty much any style. Delicate embroidery in gold feels luxurious while geometric shapes create a fresh, modern feel. If an entire tier is too much glitz for you, consider adding a little all over sparkle. Fine edible glitter can give a decorative sheen to your cake without overpowering the whole design.
Rosette Wedding Cakes
One of the trends I love is the Rosette wedding cakes they create a unique look without scrimping on elegance, they are created with all-over textural sugar roses, whether it is just one rosette tier on the bottom and a plain tier to place on top or a gathering of tiers with roses falling down them they are sure to catch your eye, but stick with subtle colours like white, cream or rose blush to keep the elegance of the cake. Lace has made a big come back in dresses and cake makers are jumping on the bandwagon and are turning out tiers embellished with beautiful designs similar to those gorgeous lace gowns.
Cake toppers are also going away from the traditional generic bride & groom with some couples using quirky caricatures of themselves which incorporate something about the couple whether a hobby, or uniform, county colours or ones that include their children. Some actually have the names of the couple or some are just a beautiful bouquet of flowers.They have become a statement piece in the whole theme of the wedding, and it’s not only about taste but also how it looks and ties in with that theme, so happy planning and most of all enjoy all those taste tests.
